The Condition of the Ummah - Part 2

When you read the Qur’an, have you ever paused to reflect on its perfection? Every verse flows without error, for it is the word of the One who is perfect—Allah. This is Allah who created us and sent us guidance. He it is who created us, informing the angels of our role on earth when He said (interpretation of the meaning):

˹Remember˺ when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to place a successive ˹human˺ authority on earth.” They asked ˹Allah˺, “Will You place in it someone who will spread corruption there and shed blood while we glorify Your praises and sanctify You?” Allah responded, “I know what you do not know.” [Quran 2:30]

This then is our role that we must implement the laws of Allah and establish His authority. This role is to call to good and to forbid the evil. The knowledge of what is right and wrong comes from the Qur’an and Sunnah, and every Muslim is required to live by that standard. The implementation is dependent on that knowledge. Knowledge, however, is not enough. What gives it life is sincerity—because actions are judged by intentions. When the heart is sincere, Allah opens the path to good. The fruits of your intention will certainly be exposed and will weigh heavily for you or against you. You are responsible for your flock, your household, and therein lies a test whether you are Allah-conscious or wavering on that front. The same measure applies to leaders and rulers.

You and your household must incline to Allah and ward off outside influences to do otherwise. Likewise, those in positions of authority must protect their people from harm and injustice. With the Qur’an and Sunnah in their care, they are entrusted to uphold fairness, defend rights, and preserve the freedom to worship Allah. They should be the protectors of the rights and freedoms of people just as you are responsible for the wellbeing of your family. These are matters that cannot be outsourced or ignored.

In conclusion: man was created to implement the authority of Allah on earth, and Muslims bear that responsibility because we submit to His laws. Falling short in protecting our families—or, on a broader scale, the Ummah—is a failure of duty. It reflects a weakness in sincerity and consciousness of Allah. Is it not time to renew our intentions, strengthen our faith, and act upon what we know to be true? If we begin with sincerity in our homes and hearts, imagine the impact on our communities, and on the oppressed people of Palestine. True change begins when we live by the guidance of Allah.

The line in the sand - Part 7

Schools of Thought

Quran and Sunnah are the two main sources of knowledge for the believer. Revisiting earlier points is an important reminder that your love for Allah and His Prophet (Muhammad ﷺ) determines how you approach your life and your adherence to Islam. Many are guilty of interpreting hadith and certain rulings to suit their understanding. “We hear and we obey” is overlooked, dismissed.

In an environment in which nothing changes, the literal understanding and application of rulings is much easier. However, the world is made up of multitudes of people from different backgrounds, simply meaning ethnicity, culture and language. With the expansion of Islam came new situations and challenges. While we can say people are ultimately the same, there may be some nuances. Referring to the sources of knowledge in Islam being Quran and Sunnah, the changing landscape created a need for the interpretation of the main sources as new situations arose. When everyone agrees, then the solution is easy. There may, though, be instances where there is no consensus, then what? I am paraphrasing some of the texts of history. The evolution and development of the Islamic legal system and jurisprudence is a subject on its own, far beyond a few paragraphs. The point is that in the first few centuries of Islam, there were certain developments which led to compilations of books and schools of thought, generally known as a madh-hab.

Beyond that lay a dangerous beast. Before, we get into that detail, it must be pointed out that there are four madhahib (pl of madh-hab) prevalent today. However, there were many more that did not survive for many reasons, not one necessarily better than the other. Understanding how matters developed during the period in which these madhahib were given life, you cannot incline to rigidity in any one madhab. This refers to acting in a way or believing that one is right and the other is wrong. These schools of thought did not come to change the shari’ah but came to bring a level of understanding to it. Therefore, the many sins being committed have not been made permissible by any of these schools of thought. Their basis is Quran and Sunnah. Thus, the rulings on tabarruj, dress-code, haircuts, dating, etc have not changed. On the matter of rigidity, sometimes people question you if you do an act of worship slightly differently and will then continue to suggest that you have formed a new madhab. The important thing is to learn and, therefore, if an act or action falls within the framework of the teachings of Islam, it is acceptable. This needs discussion for better understanding. Stick to your madhab, but if someone does one permissible act outside of the madhab, it does not mean that they do it blindly. Overlook or try to understand.

The one who learns and seeks deeper knowledge will incline to study more in depth and will seek out proofs so that he/she continues to strive to follow Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the best way possible. The imams of the madhabs were firm on all aspects of the deen, not only fiqh.

Early Hours - Part 4 - Shroud

The Weight of Responsibility: A Journey of Reflection

In the grand tapestry of existence, each individual is woven with threads of responsibility that cannot be severed. Indeed, no man or woman escapes this divine decree, except in limited circumstances known only to Allah. Death, that inevitable truth, looms over us like an unyielding shadow. On the Day of Judgment, we shall stand alone, stripped of earthly possessions and kin, facing the weight of our deeds. With hearts trembling, we prepare for this ultimate accountability, embodying our spiritual essence as we don the ihram—a profound reminder of our mortality and the transient nature of this world.

As pilgrims, when we cloak ourselves in the ihram, we accept a sacred invitation to reconnect with our Creator. Wrapped in two unsewn cloths, we are not merely participants in a ritual, but are heralding a call to introspection. This is a moment to recognize that we, and only we, are responsible for our actions. Each act of worship demands sincerity, the cornerstone of our faith. In prayer, you follow the imam so a portion of its responsibility is transferred to the imam such as reciting out loud in certain prayers, yet the responsibility of our personal connection with Allah lies solely with us. We may employ an agent to fulfill our obligatory alms, but fasting, truly, is a private act of devotion, manifesting the purity of our intention.

The pilgrimage represents the zenith of this personal journey, a sacred experience that cannot be delegated. As you recite the talbiyah, “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik,” you echo the solitary affirmation of your presence before Allah, not as a collective, but as an individual. The call is personal, a declaration that beckons you to prepare for that momentous day when all will be revealed. Truly, how can we fathom our responsibility without genuine preparation for the Day of Reckoning? The magnificence of Islam lies in its blend of stringent accountability and boundless mercy; Allah’s grace invites us to seek forgiveness and strive for closeness to Him.

On the Day of Qiyamah, the bustling noise of worldly life will fade into silence, leaving only you, accountable for your choices. Your spiritual leaders can guide you within this fleeting life, offering wisdom and support, but remember: they cannot replace your personal covenant with Allah. This bond requires urgency and intent, demanding that you rise in the stillness of pre-dawn hours, beseeching your Lord with heartfelt supplications. Reflect upon the lives of the Sahaba, who traversed the path of righteousness alongside our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, even they emerged alone in the quietude of night, seeking a closeness to Allah that transcended collective identity.

Consequently, envision the day you will be shrouded, lowered into the earth you once walked upon. Today, as you don the ihram, it serves as a living testament of your spiritual state, mirroring the shroud that awaits you. Within these sacred moments, pray not only for your forgiveness but also for the salvation of others. The day you find yourself cradled in your grave, others will seek mercy on your behalf—their prayers a testament to your journey.

May your pilgrimage be accepted, and may you emerge from this sacred act renewed, driven by the profound realization of your individual accountability before Allah. Each step taken on this journey is a step closer to Paradise, a manifestation of your devotion and sincerity. Truly, embrace this responsibility as the illuminating light guiding you towards your ultimate destination. Seek forgiveness, strive for righteousness, and immerse yourself in the ocean of Allah’s mercy—therein lies your strength and salvation.

Early Hours Part 3 - Madinah

Visiting the Holy Lands is akin to embarking on a sacred pilgrimage, where the heart is drawn irresistibly to the very cradle of our faith—Makkah, the birthplace of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This ancient city, steeped in reverence and adorned with the whispers of the past, is the hallowed ground where the first mosque—Masjid al-Haram—was built. It is the ultimate destination for pilgrims seeking solace, respite, and a deeper connection to Allah Almighty. Yet, while Makkah is not the burial place of our beloved Prophet, Muhammad ﷺ, we find ourselves yearning to be in the illuminated city of Madinah al-Munawwarah, where our beloved Prophet ﷺ is laid to rest.

The journey between these two revered cities echoes the transformative path of hijrah, a migration rich with history and significance. Making this pilgrimage, even if one is merely traversing from Madinah to Makkah, allows your spirit to absorb the essence of sacrifice, resilience, and faith that our Prophet ﷺ so beautifully embodied.

Madinah, with its serene ambiance, captures the very souls of the ummah, granted significance as the city of refuge and the resting place of our guiding light, Muhammad ﷺ. As we walk upon its soil, our hearts swell with love and loyalty for a leader who is unparalleled—a figure whose character emanated the teachings of the Quran. To follow him is not just an aspiration, but a profound obligation; for in emulating the best of creation, we endeavour to be our truest selves, just as his esteemed companions once strove to do.

Yet, amid this sanctity, one may occasionally feel a pang of inadequacy, as if unworthy of such divine grace. This conundrum only serves to deepen one's understanding of faith—that being imperfect is not a disqualifier but rather a welcoming embrace of our beautifully complex nature. To be a sinner is a reminder that our path to redemption lies in repentance and constant supplication. The Prophet ﷺ himself sought forgiveness consistently, despite being cleansed of all sin, demonstrating his profound gratitude to Allah. His actions encourage us to follow in his footsteps, fostering an unbreakable bond with the Divine, silently whispering the truths we often overlook.

In the expansive haram of Madinah, as we absorb the historical essence and reflect on the simplicity of the Prophet’s message, we engage in a spiritual odyssey—one that invites introspection and connection. Here, among the echoes of prayers and the shadows of the beloved companions, we are afforded the opportunity to evaluate our adherence to the sunnah. Acknowledging that while many of us grapple with our shortcomings, the pursuit of faith is a lifelong journey—one that commands our utmost fidelity.

To tread the path laid by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is to embody loyalty and obedience, a testament to our love for him. The act of performing Umrah, akin to a yearning embrace toward the Divine, serves as a means for forgiveness, a ritual meticulously taught by our Prophet Muhmmad ﷺ. The way of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the path we tread. This is obedience and loyalty. This is what makes one deserving of being in the precincts of Madinah. This is true love of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.  To perform umrah is to draw closer to Allah and have your sins forgiven. This is an act taught by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In like manner he has taught us our deen and our forms of worship.

Gratitude to Allah is in following him, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and feel deserving to be in Madinah and in the Holy lands. The politics is a discussion for another day, it is for us to have our acts of worship accepted by Allah.

In death, there is life

In death, there is life. Sometimes it takes a while to extract all the benefits of a statement, however small the statement may be.

Recently, I dreamt of an acquaintance of mine accepting Islam. I don’t know the reason why she accepted Islam – albeit a dream. Yet the ongoing genocide in Gaza has been the reason why many thousands of people, all over the world, have accepted Islam in recent months. Islam is a simple, yet comprehensive religion. At the core of the religion is faith. It is the religion and the faith practised and taught by all the prophets from Adam to Abraham to Moses to Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). The credo that there is only One God, Allah. This is what the people of Gaza die upon. This is upon which they withstand the occupiers. Right now, Islam is spreading like wildfire throughout Europe, as an example. Muslims have no need to lie about the beliefs of others, because these people will confess to what is said about them and their beliefs. The same cannot be said of those who feel threatened by Islam and Muslims, making up lies about Islam and Muslims. And those who feel threatened by Muslims, for the most part, are ignorant of Islam and have fallen prey to the lies spewed by some non-Muslims. This is not the forum to be absolutely specific about the lies being spread, but you are welcome to arrange a forum for us to discuss further.

While many people are flocking to Islam, Muslims born into Islam need to reflect at the character of the people of Gaza and the many thousands that have recently entered into Islam. Islam starts with belief, and it is upon which you and I, as Muslims, should die. You and I have not yet been tested with our belief, yet for many that belief is already wavering. Consider whether those entering Islam in their hordes are replacing some of us or whether we will be blessed with a good ending, i.e. that we die in complete faith, upholding Quran and Sunnah, that our faith is never in question, by the Grace and Mercy of Allah, neither did we distort the religion in any way. In death there is life, for an eternal life of bliss is awaiting the believer in paradise and martyrdom deserves nothing else but paradise.

Activating the Self-Destruct Key

If only the world realised it. Realised what? If only the world realised that it is ever closer to self-destruction.

How can the world realise it when they are slaves to the system. One group fights genocide using the tools provided by the perpetrators of genocide. We eat like them, we dress like them, we speak like them, we act like them. Satan is happy that his job is done - getting mankind to self-destruct. All he needed was his minions, and so much easier when they are from our species or at least look like it. Dark clouds are hanging over the world. A banking crisis is in the making, starting in America and having ripple effects globally. That would be an ideal starting point for World War 3. Why already Israel and Iran are setting the scene for such a war. While this war is inevitable, the timing means we will all be caught, smack bang, in the middle of it. However, it does seem premature that World War 3 will happen now. You would think that such a war will be rather devastating and impact negatively on Agenda2030. Either way, matters will get worse. It is one thing to say that the world is destined to come to an end and that, for that to happen, certain events is prophesied to take place. It is quite another to be a contributor to the destruction of the world. How is it that you wallow in this system that permits injustice (such as the inaction against genocide), that deceives you and confuses you, that deludes you into believing success is merely a worldly affair, that religion is not a way of life and not that relevant, that eating (and drinking and medicating) artificial is better than the injunction of Allah to eat natural, that global warming is a thing (without a shred of evidence except jibber jabber), etc?

Did not Allah proclaim that He created us to implement His law so that peace and justice may prevail by calling to good and prohibiting the bad, the evil. How then do we use the tools of a deceitful group who is set on creating mischief on earth? If only the world realised, nay if only you realised, that you are about to party to the destruction of the world by not sticking to Quran and Sunnah and taking the solutions from there. Simply put, what is written is not for you to be complicit, even though you may be outnumbered by those on error.

What about Iran? Are they genuine? Are they playing games? Or was the latest military action, the drones and missiles, strategic?

Will Allah save Aqsa?

Every Friday, for a Muslim, is good Friday, because Friday is the best day of the week.  As for other connotations, then that is not from Islam and we say to those people who believe in this “to you your religion and to us, ours” and we leave them be. We continue to worship Allah, who neither begets, nor is begotten, and we worship Him in the manner that He legislated.

The talk of the red heifer is almost reaching a crescendo. However, that ritual in and of itself, has no meaning and no basis in Islam. What may concern us rather is what happens after the sacrifice of the unblemished red heifer. While the general understanding from Quran is that the Jews will enter Masjid-ul-Aqsa again, the question of its destruction is not necessarily implied by it. They will cause destruction as they have already done in Gaza. But will this destruction eventually include Al-Aqsa? The rulers in the Muslim world are “steadfast in their condemnation” of the brutality meted out to the Palestinians. As for action, that is not forthcoming. The masses are told to be patient and obey their rulers. Should the scenario become reality in the short-term where Aqsa is stormed by the Jews, who will defend Aqsa. Is it that perhaps Allah will save Aqsa, the first Qiblah of the Muslims, like He saved the Ka’bah from Abrahah* and the elephants? There is a tendency for people to interpret Quran to suit their argument. The same applies to weak hadith and sometimes even fabricated hadith. You will need to avoid this and avoid sensationalism. Of course, if you do this for acts of worship, then you will have deviated from the straight path. Some people are genuinely researching current affairs and will come across information which may lack credibility. These should be discarded, and you must be patient until information reaches you from a worthy source. Indeed, leadership and guidance are lacking. The least you should do is to incline yourself, your family and general lifestyle to that which please Allah. You cannot be concerned about a possible world war or just the dire situation in Palestine and not seek ways to draw closer to Allah. It is easy to march, but more difficult to boycott businesses and products while reforming yourself is far from easy. But what outcome do you want in all of this? And is paradise not your goal? You have been more than tapped on the shoulder as a reminder.

The matters in Palestine must be of concern. These are difficult times. The red heifer is big news. The intended actions thereafter will impact Muslims and possibly the world. What are we to do then?

*Abrahah is not to be confused with Abraham. He is Abrahah al-Ashram, the Ethiopian governor of Yemen.

What is in a court judgement

It is matter of belief and trust in Allah. Everything else that may be tools in Allah's plan, you continue to place you trust in Allah and not in the potential tool itself for Allah's plan is a matter of the unseen.

Keep believing such that your entire life epitomises it. You live completely for the sake of Allah and that alone will make you a victor. "We hear and we obey". You yearn to learn the deen (the religion) of Allah only to draw closer to Allah and to increase you in faith. You strive against your shortcomings and sins and are neither complacent in this nor do you feel pride or justification in your shortcomings.

Allah guide and protect us all.

Should you boycott?

You know when you chat to someone on the phone and the conversation goes something like this:

Person 1: “Where are you?”

Person 2: "I am here, where are you?”

person 1: "I am also here, but I don’t see you”

Person 2: "strange, we are both ‘here’ but not at the same place”

This in reality becomes a mockery and confusion sets in. Now when someone, who is not happy with themselves, tell you to accept them as they are while they themselves don’t accept who they are or if they had some medical intervention, then who they were. Are you confused yet? You have to accept something in place of what they are not accepting. So, what if you accept something that you think they should accept? The world is turned on its head and the perception of reality has been skewed for too many. Marriage has always been between a man and a woman, until fairly recently but by Allah, it is always between a man and a woman. However, only females gave birth to every person currently living and that birth had to have male intervention. Thus, the reproduction of humans happens because of males and females and not males and males, neither females and females. Morals and ethics have been redefined but the nature with which we were created cannot be redefined. The accursed one, satan, is an avowed open enemy to mankind. He has confused some humans to oppose even the very nature with which they were born.

Trade is the financial dealing of goods and services. People are not obliged to patronise a store or a brand and may voluntarily decide how and where to spend their hard-earned money. How can it make sense to spend your money at places which defies even nature and engages in immorality. The sexualisation of innocent children and the messages of confusion from the promoters of LGBT as a means of protecting a minority is unjustified and illogical. Is paedophilia practised by a minority and do they need protection and promotion? Where will this end? It will not end until and unless you follow their way of life. Muslims have rights too and their right is to spend their money at businesses other than the promoters of vice. In fact, Muslims have a duty and moral responsibility to spend their money elsewhere. Muslims have a responsibility to protect their children and to teach them right from wrong.

O Muslim, if you are silent on this matter, then know you will be questioned for your silence on this very matter. O Muslim, supporting the perpetrators and promoters of these immoral people through your economic support will give them a bigger voice and soon it will consume your children. Spread the message and let us be firm on the teachings of Quran and Sunnah.  Know that Allah is the ally of the believers.

On a point of Hijab

It is a fact that madaris (plural of madrassah - "Islamic" school) are empty. Everyone stops learning at a young age because we really are busy people. We end up learning from titbits and most of our religious education is not actually obtained from people more knowledgeable than ourselves.

The aspect or issue of hijab is quite interesting as certainly everyone has an opinion on it. Opinions range from it is in my heart, to wearing a scarf, to wearing pants to "I don't care". The issue of Niqaab we will bypass that for today. The issue of hijab is ongoing and people feel proud that they wear hijab. There is agreement that it is a requirement but the application may not meet the requirement. The argument is that "she has a view, I have a view and you have a view". Well, honestly, I don't have a view. And therein lies the crux. We believe that we can have a view or opinion on matters of the deen. This is a recipe for dispute (and disaster) at every level and a time when the ignorant find a voice. I have merely used hijab as an example of how we treat matters of the deen.

There are two primary sources - Quran and Sunnah - and that remains our first port of call. We can debate about issues of deen, till the cows come home, but if there is no reference to the primary sources of knowledge then the argument or debate is futile. There are of course matters where we refer to consensus of scholars but for the most part, all our fundamental matters are dealt with in Quran and Sunnah. The point that one can have an opinion on aspects of deen makes you a scholar of Islam. Nonetheless, the opinion of anyone cannot contradict Quran and Sunnah. Few people will read this, or will want to understand this or will share this, yet they will be in disobedience to our Creator by acting on wrong information when they have an opportunity to seek true guidance or they will speak on matters and advise others while they themselves are ignorant.

The next time you say "I am dressed appropriately", then ask yourself according which Islamic ruling which you got from which source. This actually applies to anything that you think you are doing right but have not thought about the fact that you may actually have followed another blindly without reference to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.

And Allah knows best

We pray for His guidance and protection
